The Ministry of Environment plans to prepare Chheu Kach Ba Phnom Mountain as a natural and cultural heritage site

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Environment, along with a number of inter-ministerial working groups, are studying and planning to request the government to establish a natural, cultural and historical heritage site "Nokor Phnom-Cheu Kach Ba Phnom" in Prey Veng province to serve the national tourism and cultural history.

On 20 April 2022, Minister of Environment Say Sam Al chaired an inter-ministerial meeting on the study, identification and preparation of the natural and cultural heritage sites of Nokor Phnom-Chheu Kach Ba Phnom in Cheung Phnom commune and Chheu Kach district Ba Phnom village, Prey Veng Province.

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Ministry of Tourism and the Prey Veng Provincial Administrative Representative have expressed support for the project due to its location. Chhue Kach-Ba Phnom is an important place in the history of the kingdom of Kork Thlok or Nokor Phnom, which is the origin of the territory of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

At the same time, the relevant ministries and institutions are conducting a final study on the actual location and demarcation of the management area, as well as addressing the impacts before the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts request a decision from the head of the Royal Government on the establishment of natural and cultural heritage sites, the history of Nokor Phnom – Chhue Kach Ba Phnom.

It should be noted that Phnom Chheu Kach is a mountain in Moit Prey village, Chheu Kach commune, Ba Phnom district, Prey Veng province, 78 km from Phnom Penh. Ba Phnom is the old capital of Nokor Phnom, which still has some traces, such as an ancient temple called Prasat Chan, located in front of Wat Vihear Kuk near the foot of Sampov Mountain in Cheung Phnom commune. Phnom Chheu Kach is a historical site of Nokor Kork Thlok and has many traditional Khmer stories (Tum Teav).
